Ironman Barcelona 2017
Ironman Barcelona report card reads great swim, bike and transitions, run must try harder!
The swim was going to be interesting with a ripping current running down the course, I’d done a trial swim earlier in the week. A rolling start made for a calm, fairly clear swim allowing the #phantom wetsuit to glide through the water, a quick look at the watch just under half way 30minutes, (did I mention the strong current) then swam the fastest I’ve ever swam ~2k in 22minutes! The #phantoms fast but have to put this one down to the current!!! (52:52 an IM swim PB)
The bike course is amazingly fast despite not being that flat, closed roads and super surface. I’ll not mention the drafting problem as its well known on this course, not surprising with 3000 athletes, but does spoil the race. Good time to be one of the first out the water as largely stayed away from it. A great ride although failed in hitting my predicted time by 3 secs (4:45:03!!!! an IM Bike PB Must try harder next time
Onto the run and the first 4k went well then the ham strings started tightening, and it was all will power from there, stopped and stretched at about 26km, wished I’d done it sooner. Picked the pace up from there and finished strongly (9:28:58) for my 2nd fastest IM. Happy with that although somewhat off my target. I always look for the positives, I was one of the oldest in my age cat and move up a cat in January (I would have been 5th in the new cat and qualified for Kona) so the dream of a 4th Kona appearance continues, I will do it!!!!
Thanks for the continued support of Aqua Sphere helping me keep up the great swim performances @Aqausphereuk #trueswimmer
